Nylon vs. polyester: what is the difference?

Nylon vs. polyester: what is the difference?

Carpet is a favorite floor covering, especially for bedrooms, living and family rooms, and stairs. Basements are often warmed with carpeting, too. There are newer fibers that have expanded carpet applications in the home. But tried-and-true nylon is still the most popular carpet fiber, and homeowners often choose polyester, too. You can find both types of carpets and much more at Pipestone Interiors, a carpet store in Pipestone, Minnesota. We offer wall-to-wall carpeting and custom area rugs.

Nylon

Nylon is the most durable synthetic carpet fiber available, and thus it can be subjected to a large amount of foot traffic without becoming damaged. Perhaps nylon is most notable for its resilience. The carpeting retains its original look throughout the years because fibers bounce back after compression from heavy furniture and footsteps. The fiber is porous, so it's treated in the factory for stain resistance.

Polyester

In contrast, polyester is a hydrophobic fiber that naturally repels water and spills. Therefore, polyester is highly stain-resistant. Because the fiber is less resilient than nylon, the lifespan of a polyester carpet is lengthened if it is installed in a low-traffic area like a bedroom. Polyester carpet, known for its vibrant colors, is often made from recycled materials like plastic drink bottles. In general, polyester carpeting is less costly than nylon carpeting.
